Soriano wins coaching debut for Lady Eagles, Altas score

FORMER star Charo Soriano notched her first win as Ateneo coach, as the Lady Eagles turned back Far Eastern University, 25-17, 25-22, 25-20, yesterday at the start of the Shakey’s V-League first conference at the Filoil Flying V Arena in San Juan.

Soriano, who at the age of 25 has become the league’s youngest coach, bucked her nervousness in her coaching debut for Ateneo, which banked on guest player Alyssa Valdez’s game-long brilliance.

In the other match, April Ann Sartin scored all of her 15 hits from attacks and collected 11 digs as University of Perpetual Help System Dalta eked out a surprisingly easy 25-18, 25-17, 25-17 win over National University.

Sandra delos Santos added 11 points, including two blocks, for the Lady Altas, who were title contenders in the recent NCAA women’s volleyball tournament but were disqualified due to eligibility violations. Read the rest of this entry »

Tigresses, Tamaraws back in finals

UNIVERSITY of Santo Tomas remains on course for a second straight crown in the UAAP women’s volleyball tournament.

Aiza Maizo delivered a MVP-like performance as the Tigresses registered a 25-23, 25-18, 17-25, 25-21 win over Adamson in the ‘Final Four’ Wednesday at the Filoil Flying V Arena in San Juan.

UST in semis, La Salle moved closer to ‘twice-to-beat’

DEFENDING champion University of Santo Tomas rebounded from a stunning loss to University of the Philippines with an emphatic  25-14, 25-18, 25-17 win over University of the East and claim the second ‘Final Four’ berth in the UAAP women’s volleyball tournament Saturday at the Filoil Flying V Arena sa San Juan.

Aiza Maizo unloaded 13 hits, 12 of which coming from attacks, while Judy Ann Caballejo and Maika Ortiz chipped in 11 points apiece for the Tigresses.

UST hiked its record to 8-3, holding an one and a half game lead over Ateneo and Adamson, which both currently tote identical 6-4 marks, in the race for the second ‘twice-to-beat’ bonus in  the semis. Read the rest of this entry »

La Salle unscathed in Baguio Inter-Colllegiate Bash

FORMER UAAP champion La Salle plummeled host University of the Cordilleras, 25-15, 25-8, 25-17, to remain unscathed in the women’s division of the National Intercollegiate Volleyball Championship Wednesday at the University of the Cordilleras Gym in Baguio City.

By posting their third straight win, the Ramil de Jesus-mentored Lady Archers booked a semifinal berth in the week-long tournament.

The Taft-based spikers also beat University of Perpetual Help System Dalta, 25-23, 25-20, 25-13, and University of the East, 25-18, 25-15, 25-13.

After battling with University of Baguio last night, the Lady Archers will face St. Louis University at the end of the elimination round today.

This is the first tournament that La Salle has joined since losing the UAAP women’s crown to University of Santo Tomas last February.

Defending champion Ateneo did not join this year due to commitments in the Shakey’s V-League first conference. (TJ)
