NCAA volley-brawl decision: Everyone is not happy

IT seems that everyone is not happy with the NCAA’s decision Tuesday night to crack the whip on San Beda College basketball team and San Sebastian College volleyball coach Roger Gorayeb on the ugly brawl happened three months ago.

The league’s Policy Board gave Red Lions mentor Frankie Lim and Gorayeb two-year suspension based on the recommendation by the Management Committee.

“Ang school ang mag-appeal (ng suspension),” said Gorayeb, the multi-titled Lady Stags mentor, in a text message.

Gorayeb, who was ganged up by the San Beda basketball team which forced the abrupt end of the women’s volleyball match between San Sebastian and University of Perpetual Help System Dalta, did not make any further comments. Read the rest of this entry »

Total domination: UPHSD spikers sweep NCAA volley crowns

UNIVERSITY of Perpetual Help System Dalta capped its domination in NCAA volleyball by winning two division titles Monday at the Ninoy Aquino Stadium. The Lady Altas buried the ghost of the past by tripping Letran, 25-15, 26-24, 25-10, and win their first-ever women’s title via a two-game sweep.

Earlier, Perpetual Help subdued San Beda College, 25-14, 25-15, 25-23, to cop its second straight men’s title. Season MVP Sandra delos Santos and Honey Royse Tubino registered 14 points apiece while team captain Janice Abar added eight hits for the Lady Altas.
“Masaya ako dahil first time ito ng school.  Dapat noong isang taon pa ito, kaya lang hindi nangyari.  Pinatunayan namin na deserving kaming mag-champion,” said Perpetual Help mentor Mike Rafael, who is handling the Las Piñas-based squad for 15 years. Read the rest of this entry »

UPHSD, Letran in an like NCAA women’s volley finals

SANDRA delos Santos dropped 20 hits as University of Perpetual Help System Dalta easily disposed defending champion San Sebastian College, 25-11, 25-19, 25-11, and clinch its first-ever finals stint in the NCAA women’s volleyball tournament Friday at the Ninoy Aquino Stadium.

It was the second consecutive straight set win in the semifinals by the Lady Altas, who are looking for their first crown since joining the league in 1984.

Letran then arranged an unlikely championship duel with Perpetual Help after eliminating Emilio Aguinaldo College, 17-25, 25-16, 25-17, 25-16, later in the day.

The Lady Knights, who will take on the Lady Altas in a no-bearing match on Monday, booked their second straight finals trip.

Manel Carolino, the youngest of the famed Carolino spiking siblings, finished with 22 hits, while setter Gena Andaya added 12 points and Sarah Espelita had nine markers for Letran. Read the rest of this entry »

Lady Generals turn back Bombers

EMILIO Aguinaldo College played sluggish in the first two sets before disposing Jose Rizal University, 26-24, 25-23, 25-17, and advance to the semifinals of the NCAA women’s volleyball tournament Wednesday at the EAC Gym.

The Lady Generals survived a tough challenge by the Lady Bombers in the one hour and 12 minute match to clinch their second straight ‘Final Four’ stint.

Letran remained in the hunt for the last semis berth by plummeling Mapua, 25-14, 25-13, 25-11, in the other distaff side match.

EAC rebounded from a five-set loss to guest team Lyceum the last time out to claim its sixth win in eight starts.

The Lady Knights hiked their record to 4-3 and tie the Lady Pirates in fifth place.

Letran and Lyceum are trailing by a game behind San Beda College and defending champion San Sebastian, both toting 5-2 cards, in the race for the last semifinals berth.

University of Perpetual Help System Dalta, which has already booked a slot in the semifinals, has an immaculate 7-0 slate.

The Lady Bombers suffered their seventh loss in eight matches, while the Lady Cardinals fell to 0-8 record.

In the men’s division, the Knights turned back the Cardinals, 25-20, 25-17, 25-23, to remain in contention for the last ‘Final Four’ berth with a 3-4 record.

The Generals defeated the Heavy Bombers, 26-24, 25-22, 25-19, for their third win against five losses. (TJ)

Lady Stags gain, Pirates score

REIGNING six-time champion San Sebastian College is getting into the groove of things in the NCAA women’s volleyball tournament.

The Lady Stags booted College of Saint Benilde out of contention with a 25-23, 25-22, 25-22 victory and boost their ‘Final Four’ bid Sunday at the Ninoy Aquino Stadium.

By posting its fourth consecutive win, San Sebastian moved up to third place at 5-2 behind early semifinalist University of Perpetual Help System Dalta (7-0) and second-running Emilio Aguinaldo College (5-1).

Guest team Lyceum revitalized its bid for a ‘Final Four’ berth by tripping Jose Rizal University, 25-17, 20-25, 25-15, 25-19.

The Lady Pirates rebounded from a disappointing second set loss to halt their two-game losing skid. Read the rest of this entry »
