Total domination: UPHSD spikers sweep NCAA volley crowns

UNIVERSITY of Perpetual Help System Dalta capped its domination in NCAA volleyball by winning two division titles Monday at the Ninoy Aquino Stadium. The Lady Altas buried the ghost of the past by tripping Letran, 25-15, 26-24, 25-10, and win their first-ever women’s title via a two-game sweep.

Earlier, Perpetual Help subdued San Beda College, 25-14, 25-15, 25-23, to cop its second straight men’s title. Season MVP Sandra delos Santos and Honey Royse Tubino registered 14 points apiece while team captain Janice Abar added eight hits for the Lady Altas.
“Masaya ako dahil first time ito ng school.  Dapat noong isang taon pa ito, kaya lang hindi nangyari.  Pinatunayan namin na deserving kaming mag-champion,” said Perpetual Help mentor Mike Rafael, who is handling the Las Piñas-based squad for 15 years. Read the rest of this entry »

UPHSD still unbeaten in NCAA women’s volley

UNIVERSITY of Perpetual Help System Dalta lowered down its guard, but was still able to turn back Letran, 25-16, 25-19, 25-15, and complete a three-game sweep of the NCAA women’s volleyball semifinals last night at the Ninoy Aquino Stadium.

The two teams, who will cross paths in the best-of-three finals series which will start on Friday, kept the aces under their sleeves, but the Lady Altas showed their superiority to extend the Las Piñas-based spikers unbeaten run to 12 games.

The Lady Knights, who are making their second consecutive finals stint, ended up their semis assignments in second place at 2-1.

Earlier, deposed champion San Sebastian College finished its season in third place with a 25-21, 30-28, 15-25, 25-21 victory over Emilio Aguinaldo College. Read the rest of this entry »

UPHSD, Letran in an like NCAA women’s volley finals

SANDRA delos Santos dropped 20 hits as University of Perpetual Help System Dalta easily disposed defending champion San Sebastian College, 25-11, 25-19, 25-11, and clinch its first-ever finals stint in the NCAA women’s volleyball tournament Friday at the Ninoy Aquino Stadium.

It was the second consecutive straight set win in the semifinals by the Lady Altas, who are looking for their first crown since joining the league in 1984.

Letran then arranged an unlikely championship duel with Perpetual Help after eliminating Emilio Aguinaldo College, 17-25, 25-16, 25-17, 25-16, later in the day.

The Lady Knights, who will take on the Lady Altas in a no-bearing match on Monday, booked their second straight finals trip.

Manel Carolino, the youngest of the famed Carolino spiking siblings, finished with 22 hits, while setter Gena Andaya added 12 points and Sarah Espelita had nine markers for Letran. Read the rest of this entry »

UPHSD, Letran win NCAA semis opener

UNIVERSITY of Perpetual Help System Dalta carried its unbeaten run in the NCAA women’s volleyball semifinals by subduing Emilio Aguinaldo College, 25-19, 25-18, 25-13 Wednesday at the Ninoy Aquino Stadium.Later, Letran remained on track for a second straight finals stint with a 25-17, 20-25, 26-24, 25-21 decision of reigning six-time champion San Sebastian College.

Manel Carolino had 16 points, including four blocks, while Melissa Cu added 13 markers for the Lady Knights.

Lady Altas sweeps NCAA volley elims

UNIVERSITY of Perpetual Help System Dalta easily breezed the NCAA women’s volleyball eliminations with plenty to spare.

But the hard part begins for the Lady Altas, to sustain their impressive showing in the semifinals.

Perpetual Help completed a nine-game elimination round sweep by tripping also-ran Arellano University, 25-18, 25-20, 25-17, Monday at the Ninoy Aquino Stadium.

Even with nothing was at stake, the Lady Altas played just hard enough in the one hour, three minute match to remain unscathed.

In the single-round semifinals which starts tomorrow, Perpetual Help will take on Emilio Aguinaldo College, while reigning six-time champion San Sebastian College and Letran face off in a rematch of last season’s finals.

“Ibang laban ang semifinals, hindi pa kami nakakaseguro.  Sinabi ko sa mga bata na huwag magkumpiyansa dahil lahat ng team gusto tayong talunin,” said Lady Altas coach Mike Rafael.

The Lady Chiefs finished their season in seventh place with a 4-5 mark.

In men’s play, titleholder Perpetual Help turned back Arellano, 25-14, 22-25, 25-21, 25-19, to also register a nine-game sweep of eliminations.

The Chiefs wound up in second spot with an 8-1 card.

In the juniors division, reigning titlist Perpetual Help ended up in second place after subduing Arellano, 25-13, 25-23, 25-16.

The Junior Altas have a 6-1 record behind elims topnotcher Brigadiers, who have not tasted defeat in seven assignments. (TJ)
