St. Benilde downs San Beda in NCAA volley

COLLEGE of Saint Benilde made overpowered San Beda College, 25-10, 25-16, 25-14, to jump into a share of second place with University of Perpetual Help System Dalta in the penultimate day of the elimination round NCAA women’s volleyball competition Sunday at the Emilio Aguinaldo College Gym.

Already assured a place in the semifinals, the Thelma Barina-Rojas-mentored Lady Blazers leaned on their bench depth to help them ease their way to No. 2 alongside the Lady Altas on identical 6-1 (win-loss) slates in this event backed by Mikasa and Asics. Read the rest of this entry »

Lady Stingers Foil Pirates, Lady Cobras Triumph

UNIVERSITY of St. La Salle, playing with no pressure at all, will go back home to Bacolod with a win.

The Lady Stingers foiled semifinalist Lyceum bid for the Group I top seed with a surprising 25-22, 25-19, 25-23 win in the Shakey’s V-League first conference quarterfinals Thursday at the Filoil Flying V Arena in San Juan.

USLS, which also scored an elimination round victory against Far Eastern University, finished its quarters campaign with an 1-2 mark.

By settling to a 2-1 record, the Lady Pirates’ campaign to seize the No. 1 ranking in Group I in the event sponsored by Shakey’s Pizza and backed by PLDT myDSL is now hanging in the balance.

Lyceum will tie either Adamson and San Sebastian College for the top spot when the two teams meet in a ‘do or die’ duel for the last semifinals berth on May 13.

Ties regarding on the Group I top seed will be broken thru point ratio system. In the semifinal, the Group I topnotcher will meet the second-ranked team of Group II in a best-of-three series, while the Group I’s No. 2 and the Group II top seed will face off in the other ‘Final Four’pairing.

Alumna Michelle Laborte finished with 16 hits while Patty Orendain and guest player Princess Pido added 12 and 11 points, respectively,for the Lady Stingers. Playing like there’s no tomorrow, USLS mentor Roger Banzuela was visibly happy on the way her wards play in their final game of the tournament organized by Sports Vision and supported by Accel, Mikasa and Mighty Bond.

Lyceum tows St. Benilde to quarters, USLS win

THANKS to Lyceum’s straight set win over University of San Jose-Recoletos, College of Saint Benilde got a free ride to the Shakey’s V-League first conference quarterfinals.

Setting aside from a heartbreaking setback the last time out, the Lady Pirates booted the Lady Jaguars out of contention with a 25-17, 25-20, 25-18 victory at the end of the elimination round Thursday at the Filoil Flying V Arena in San Juan.

Lyceum rebounded from a 24-26, 16-25, 19-25 defeat to Ateneo last Sunday to finish with a 3-1 card in Group B.

USJ-R lost its final chance to claim the remaining quarterfinals berth by absorbing a fourth consecutive loss in the event organized by Sports Vision and sponsored by Shakey’s Pizza.

With the ouster of the Lady Jaguars, the Lady Blazers ended their week-long wait to advance to the next round of the tournament backed by PLDT myDSL and supported by Accel, Mikasa and Mighty Bond.

In the second game, University of St. La Salle took the third spot in Group A by outplaying Southwestern University, 25-23, 19-25, 25-22, 25-18.
The Lady Stingers finished their elims campaign with a 2-2 record, while the Lady Cobras ended in fourth spot with a 1-3 slate.

Lady Stingers win debut, Lady Falcons Score

UNIVERSITY of St. La Salle of Bacolod used its vaunted blocking to turn back Far Eastern University, 25-22, 25-8, 25-11, yesterday in the Shakey’s V-League first conference at the Filoil Flying V Arena sa San Juan.

Patty Orendain registered 16 hits while Kay Aplasca added 15 points to help the Lady Stingers, the reigning NOPSCEA champions, notch their first win in the season-opening tournament.

“Nag-click naman ang laro namin although sa first set, ninerbiyos ang mga bata,” said USLS mentor Roger Banzuela.
“Pigil yung palo ni Patty (Orendain) kaya sinabihan ko siya sa second set na itodo yung mga atake mo and she did.  Bukod sa blocking, maganda rin ang floor defense ng mga bata,” he added.

The 5-foot-6 Orendain displayed an impressive all-around game by scoring three service aces and nine digs.
Even without guest player Michelle Laborte, the Lady Stingers scored eight blocks, with four coming from Aplasca and two from Gianes Dolar.

Cherry Vivas and Monique Tiangco combined for 11 points for the Lady Tamaraws, who fell to the bottom of the Group A standings with a  0-2 slate.

In the first game, Angela Benting sizzled for a tournament-high 27 points, including four service aces, while Pau Soriano had 18 hits as Adamson bounced back from a four-set loss to Lyceum by tripping College of Saint Benilde, 25-11, 25-14, 23-25, 25-22.
