Lady Tams, Falcons boost UAAP semis bids

FAR Eastern University and Adamson boosted their respective ‘Final Four’ bids after posting contrasting victories Sunday in the UAAP women’s volleyball tournament at the Filoil Flying V Arena in San Juan.

Lady Eagles survive Falcons, retains 2nd spot

ATENEO bucked a searing Adamson rally in the fourth frame and held steadier in the deciding set to escape with a 22-25, 25-19, 16-25, 25-23, 15-11 win and retain second place at the end of the first round of the UAAP women’s volleyball tournament Wednesday at the Filoil Flying V Arena sa San Juan.

Dzi Gervacio dropped a season-high 19 hits while Fille Cainglet added 14 markers as the Lady Eagles extended their winning run to four games.

A yellow card was handed out on libero Angelica Vasquez for pointing an accusing finger to the referee did not help for the Lady Falcons in the fourth frame, which changed the complexion of the match.

Earlier, Far Eastern University capped its first round campaign with an easy 25-23, 25-17, 25-19 victory over National University.

Rosemarie Vargas poured in 13 hits, while Wenneth Eulalio added 11 points, including three blocks for the Lady Tamaraws, who drew 17 digs from libero Christine Agno. Read the rest of this entry »

Tigresses, Tamaraws back in finals

UNIVERSITY of Santo Tomas remains on course for a second straight crown in the UAAP women’s volleyball tournament.

Aiza Maizo delivered a MVP-like performance as the Tigresses registered a 25-23, 25-18, 17-25, 25-21 win over Adamson in the ‘Final Four’ Wednesday at the Filoil Flying V Arena in San Juan.

Lady Falcons enter ‘F4′

DEFENDING women’s champion Adamson claimed the first semifinals berth as Angela Benting and Pau Soriano clobbered Pau Genido and Aya del Mundo of the University of the Philippines, 21-10, 21-12, Sunday in the UAAP beach volleyball tournament at the UE Caloocan sand court.

The Lady Falcons, seeking a second straight tiara, hiked their record to 5-0.

Far Eastern University kept within striking distance of Adamson as Shaira Gonzalez and Shedd dela Peña dumped Jessica Paron and Alexandra Cueva of the University of the East, 21-16, 21-19, for a 4-1 slate.

The Lady Tamaraws need to win one more match to advance into the ‘Final Four’.

La Salle and University of Santo Tomas kept their joint hold of third place after posting contrasting victories.

Charleen Cruz and Amanda Villanueva of the Lady Archers needed three sets to subdue Ateneo’s Asia Urquico and Sharah So, 18-21, 21-11, 15-7.

Lady Eagles boost q’finals bid

THAI import Boonyuen Surasawadee unloaded 23 points as Ateneo survived a gritty Lyceum side, 25-10, 17-25, 16-25, 25-22, 15-12, to boost its bid for a quarterfinals berth in the Shakey’s V-League second conference Sunday night at the FilOil Flying V Arena in San Juan.

The Lady Eagles banked on the heroics on Surasawadee and team captain Jem Ferrer to cool down a searing Lady Pirates rally in the fifth frame and score the hard-earned five-set victory.

Ateneo improved to 3-1 mark to strengthen its campaign for a slot in the next round of the tournament sponsored by Shakey’s Pizza and supported by Accel, Mikasa at Excelroof.

Lyceum fell to fourth spot with a 3-3 behind third-running Far Eastern University (3-2).

San Sebastian College-Excelroof already booked the first quarterfinals berth after beating National University, 25-15, 25-18, 25-14, while Adamson moved closer in advancing into the next round by blasting College of Saint Benilde, 25-23, 25-11, 25-23.
