ATENEO had a lot of offensive weapons in its disposal to offset Fille Cainglet’s sub-par showing and subdue Far Eastern University, 25-22, 25-21, 23-25, 25-20, and remain in second place Wednesday in the UAAP women’s volleyball tournament at the Filoil Flying V Arena in San Juan.

REIGNING six-time champion San Sebastian College is getting into the groove of things in the NCAA women’s volleyball tournament.

DESPITE a lackadaisical second set, Ateneo played just hard enough to remain in second place in the UAAP women’s volleyball tournament.

The Lady Eagles dealt University of the Philippines a sixth straight loss with a 25-13, 25-21, 25-12 win Sunday at the Filoil Flying V Arena in San Juan.

Ateneo hiked its record to 4-1 behind defending champion La Salle, which is unbeaten in six outings.

Earlier, University of Santo Tomas extended its winning run to four and seized solo hold of third spot, posting a 25-11, 25-21, 25-18 decision of National University.

“Masaya kami sa panalo, pero hindi ako satisfied sa second set.  We have committed 12 unforced errors, we gave away a lot of easy points sa kalaban,” said Lady Eagles mentor Roger Gorayeb.

Ateneo stepped up its game in the third frame, where Fille Cainglet, Gretchen Ho and Dzi Gervacio delivered to complete the straight sets win.

Alyssa Valdez and Cainglet finished with 15 points apiece, while Ho and Gervacio chipped in seven hits apuece and libero Denden Lazaro had 11 digs for the Lady Eagles. Read the rest of this entry »

ABIGAIL Maraño scattered 15 points as defending champion La Salle moved closer in completing a first round sweep with a 25-18, 25-14, 25-18 triumph of University of the East Saturday in the UAAP women’s volleyball tournament at the Filoil Flying V Arena in San Juan.

The league’s leading attacker, Maraño, a native of Antipolo City, had 11 spikes and contributed three of the Lady Archers’ nine blocks.

“Si Abi (Maraño), nag-step up at masaya naman ako.  Mataas talaga ang expectations ko sa kanya,” said La Salle mentor Ramil de Jesus.

Later, Far Eastern University benched ace scorer Maica Morada but was still able to hammer out an surprising 25-22, 25-23, 25-17 win over Adamson and force a three-way tie in third place. Read the rest of this entry »

EARLY semifinalist University of Perpetual Help System Dalta bucked a first set loss to upend Letran, 24-26, 25-23, 25-19, 25-22, and extend their winning run to seven games in the NCAA women’s volleyball tournament Saturday at the Ninoy Aquino Stadium.

Later, Emilio Aguinaldo College moved closer in claiming its second straight semifinals stint by crushing Mapua, 25-7, 25-11, 25-11.
