UE pair crowned Petron volley queens

PUERTO PRINCESA CITY – Jessica Paron and new partner Francislyn Cais came up with timely offensive moves to power University of the East-1 to a 21-18, 21-17 repulsing of University of the Philippines-2’s Pau Genido and new teammate Liezchel Tiu. Their smart and creative plays gifted them the 2011 Petron Ladies’ Beach Volleyball Battle of Champions crown Wednesday evening at the Baywalk here.
Their run of victories totaled seven at the end of the two-day spikefest backed by Speedo, Mikasa and the City of Puerto Princesa, which celebrated the 65th birthday of Mayor Edward Hagedorn. For Paron, this is her best finish in the tournament, after she and Jimberly Dizon made it to fifth place in the University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) beach volleyball competitions last month. Ateneo Open Tournament

EVERYTHING is all set for the 2011 Ateneo Open Tournament slated on October 15 and 16 at the Ateneo College Covered Courts.

The event is a two-day open-to-all league facilitated and organized by the Ateneo Volleyball Club and Women’s Basketball Club and it will serve as an avenue to raise funds for the Ateneo Alumni Scholars Association and various sports programs of the school.

The event, supported by Yellow Cab, RNW Pacific Pipes, GetBlued, Slimmer’s World, 360° Fitness Club, Balls, Chalk Magazine, Krispy Kreme, TMX Sports and McDonalds, will have basketball and volleyball tournaments this coming weekend.

On the other hand, football and frisbee competitions will be held on the second and third week of November at the Ateneo High School Field.

National Open: Lady Archers bow to Indonesians

INDONESIA reasserted its mastery of reigning UAAP champion La Salle, 25-19, 25-15, 25-20, to clinch the women’s championship of the 2011 National Open Sunday at the Ninoy Aquino Stadium.
Philippine Air Force-Globe retained the men’s crown by tripping NCAA titleholder University of Perpetual Help System Dalta, 25-18, 25-19, 34-32.
The Indonesians weathered a late Lady Archers rally in the third frame to seal the title.
Cha Cruz banged in a kill for La Salle to take a 19-17 advantage, before Indonesia scored eight of the game’s last nine points, highlighted by a match-winning hit by Amalia Fajrina Nabila. Read the rest of this entry »

THE best of the best face cross paths next week in the Battle of Champions, the final leg of the 2011 Petron Ladies beach volleyball tournament at Baywalk in the City of Puerto Princesa. Champions and runners up in the previous three legs compete against each other in the Oct. 11 to 12 meet featuring seven teams from Manilaand three others from the host city. 

Top bets from Letran and De La Salle University-Dasmarinas are expected to crowd each other for the title and the bragging rights as this year’s `Queen of the Beach.’ Letran is bannered by Manel Carolino and new partner Sarah Jane Espelita. Carolino with Gena Andaya as partner, took runner-up honors behind back-to-back champions Jennifer Manzano and Satchel Senupe in
