WITH the game slowly slipping away, Vietnam held steadier in the end to become the V-League Southeast Asia Club Invitational champions.

Russian reinforcements Anactaxia Trernai and Ekaterina Martynova steered Vietnam to a come-from-behind 18-25, 14-25, 25-22, 25-23, 15-8 win over Philippine Army in the finals Sunday night at the Filoil Flying V Arena in San Juan.

Trernai led the way for Vietnamese with 24 points while Martynova, who was named the tournament MVP, chipped in 17 hits.

“After we lost the first two sets, we did not stop.  Everybody worked hard and they gave everything,” said the 24-year old Trernai, who has a previous stint in Cyprus. Read the rest of this entry »

PHILIPPINE Army made short work of Ateneo, 25-13, 25-9, 25-17, to arrange an interesting finals showdown with Vietnam at the end of the V-League Southeast Asian Club Invitational eliminations Saturday at the Filoil Flying V Arena in San Juan.

VIETNAM took advantage of Philippine Army’s errors to post 25-20, 25-23, 25-23 win and claim the championship berth in the V-League Southeast Asia Club Invitational Friday at the Filoil Flying V Arena sa San Juan.

VIETNAM’s Russian reinforcements were as good as advertised, as the visitors made short work of Ateneo, 25-15, 25-16, 25-17, at the start of the V-League Southeast Asian Club Invitational Thursday at the Filoil Flying V Arena in San Juan. TEAM ASC won the women’s volleyball crown, while the All Stars claimed the men’s title at the end of the 1st Ateneo Open Tournament late Sunday at the Ateneo covered courts.

Starring setter Ers Iratay, who was named the women’s MVP, Team ASC turned back Hope Christian High School Alumni, 25-22, 20-25, 25-22, 25-22, in the one-game finals.

The All-Stars banked on the game-long efforts of men’s MVP Jonathan Gianan to outlast San Beda College, 16-25, 25-22, 24-26, 25-21, 15-8, in the men’s championship.

WAV, which featured former University of the East players, took the third place in the distaff side after turning back Ateneo Alumni in a five-set marathon, 25-15, 21-25, 25-19, 21-25, 18-16.

In basketball, Team Carlo bagged the men’s division crown, while the University of Asia and the Pacific cagebelles bagged the title in the women’s side.

There were 36 teams that participated in the volleyball and basketball games in the two-day tournament sponsored by RnW Pacific Pipes, McDonald’s, Slimmers’ World, Yellow Cab, Balls’ Channel, Chalk Magazine, Get Blued and 360° Fitness Club.

The opening ceremony was hosted by television commentator Boom Gonzales and Gretchen Ho.

The Frisbee and football events will be held next month.
