Tigresses earn No. 1 seed in UAAP beach volley semis

UNIVERSITY of Santo Tomas clinched the top seed in the women’s semifinals, while titleholder Far Eastern University completed a seven-game sweep of eliminations to advance to the men’s finals outright in the UAAP beach volleyball tournament Sunday at the UE Caloocan sand court.

Maru Banaticla and Judy Caballejo of the Tigresses defeated Shedd dela Peña and Loryvel Faytaren of Far Eastern University, 21-11, 21-19, to finish the elims with four straight wins.

UST tied Ateneo on top with identical 6-1 slates, but the Tigresses earned the No. 1 ranking by virtue of their straight sets win over the Lady Eagles in preliminaries.

Alyssa Valdez and Bea Tan of Ateneo capped the eliminations with a 21-11, 21-14 thumpaing of the University of the East pair of Jimberly Dawn Dizon and Jessica Paron.

Defending champion Adamson claimed the ‘Final Four’ slot after Pau Soriano and Sheila Pineda upended Michelle Gumabao and Camille Cruz of La Salle 21-11, 21-15.

The Lady Falcons wound up third with a 5-2 record to arrange a crossover semis meeting with the Lady Eagles on September 17.

In the other distaff side match, University of the Philippines’ Aia del Mundo and Pau Genido waylaid Mary Grace Diesta and Lucille Bayron of National University, 21-18, 21-17.

The Lady Archers, the Lady Tamaraws and the Lady Warriors ended up with identical 3-4 records, but the Taft-based spikers earned the right to face the Tigresses in the ‘Final Four’ by virtue of a superior quotient.

The Lady Maroons finished the season at 2-5 in seventh spot, while the Lady Bulldogs went winless in seven matches.

FEU copped the first finals slot in the men’s side as Karl dela Calzada and Arvin Avila nipped UST’s Jayson Ramos and Mark Gil Alfafara, 22-20, 19-21, 15-12.

Adamson sealed the No. 2 seed in the stepladder semis after John Hendrix Competente and Gilbert Longavela outplayed Mico Lucindo and Mark Sagad of UP, 21-14, 21-16.

The Falcons tallied a 6-1 card, while the Growling Tigers fell to third with a 5-2 record, and will meet the Fighting Maroons in the stepladder semis.

UP, La Salle and UE are tied at 3-4, but the Fighting Maroons booked the No. 4 slot by virtue of a higher quotient.

The Green Archers scored a 21-14, 21-16 win over the Red Warriors, while the Blue Eagles nipped the Bulldogs, 21-18, 24-26. (TJ)

    NU Bulldogs def. ADMU Blue Eagles in the Men’s BV Match: 18-21, 26-24, 15-10.

    And Sam Paquiz is Lucindo’s partner, not Mark Sagad. :)
