UNIVERSITY of Santo Tomas made sure that there will be a crossover semifinals in the women’s division of the UAAP beach volleyball tournament.
The Tigresses pair of Maru Banaticla and Judy Caballejo dealt the first loss of Ateneo’s Alyssa Valdez and Bea Tan with an emphatic 21-18, 21-12 victory in the eliminations Wednesday at the UE Caloocan sand court.
Banaticla was on fire, connecting six service aces in second set as UST notch its second straight win.
The Tigresses thus joined Lady Eagles, who failed to march into the ‘Final Four’ ahead of everybody, for the top spot.
“Pinaghandaan namin yung blocking ni Alyssa (Valdez). Na-practice namin ito,” said Banaticla, who is on her third season playing for UST.
University of the East meanwhile remained in the hunt for the last semis berth as Jimberly Dawn Dizon and Jessica Paron defeated Shedd dela Peña and Loryvel Faytaren of Far Eastern University, 15-21, 21-13, 15-5.
In other matches, Pau Soriano and Sheila Pineda of defending champion Adamson tripped Pau Genido and Aia del Mundo of University of the Philippines, 21-18, 21-14, while La Salle’s Michelle Gumabao and Camille Cruz drubbed Lucille Bayron and Mary Grace Diesta of National University, 21-9, 22-20.
The Lady Falcons, the Lady Archers and the Lady Tamaraws are in a three-way tie in third at 3-2, while the Lady Warriors are not far behind with a 2-3 slate.
The Lady Maroons and the Lady Bulldogs fell to 1-4 and 0-5 marks, respectively.
In the men’s division, FEU claimed the first semis slot by tripping Ateneo, 21-18, 26-24, for a 5-0 card. (TJ)
