ATENEO rallied from a nine-point first set deficit to subdue reigning women’s champion Adamson, 23-21, 21-17, and move closer in clinching the first ‘Final Four’ berth Sunday in the UAAP beach volleyball tournament at the UE Caloocan sand court.
The Lady Falcons pair of Pau Soriano and Sheila Pineda raced to a 10-1 advantage, but Alyssa Valdez and Bea Tan got their bearings back for the Lady Eagles to escape the victory in the opening frame.
Ateneo then took control in the second set to extend its winning streak to four and solidify its hold of the top spot.
University of Santo Tomas and Far Eastern University, meanwhile, are still tied in second place with identical 3-1 cards after routing their respective foes.
Maru Banaticla and Judy Caballejo of the Tigresses easily disposed Jimberly Dawn Dizon and Jessica Paron of University of the East, 21-16, 21-13, while Shedd dela Peña and Loryvel Faytaren of the Lady Tamaraws turned back National University’s Mary Grace Diesta and Lucille Bayron, 21-14, 21-11.
Adamson fell to 2-2 to join La Salle in fourth place.
The Lady Archers tandem of Michelle Gumabao and Camille Cruz continued their rise from a 0-2 start by nipping Aia del Mundo and Pau Genido of University of the Philippines, 19-21, 21-19, 15-10.
The Lady Warriors and the Lady Maroons fell to 1-3 cards, while the Lady Bulldogs remained winless in four starts. (TJ)
