Lady Troopers win V-League Open c’ship
PHILIPPINE Army held steadier in the last two sets to nip San Sebastian, 27-25, 20-25, 22-25, 25-23, 15-10, and claim the Shakey’s V-League Open Conference crown Thursday night at the Filoil Flying V Arena in San Juan.
The Lady Troopers forced a deciding frame when Rachel Daquis connected two service aces to shatter a 21-21 standoff and Michelle Carolino atoned herself from an attacking error with a set-winning kill.
Mary Jean Balse then took charge, scoring two crucial hits for the Army to take a 13-7 lead in the fifth set and never looked back.

Lady Troopers near V-League Open crown
PHILIPPINE Army showed its dominance in the opening set before coasting to a 25-9, 25-20, 25-16 win over San Sebastian College and move closer in claiming the Shakey’s V League Open Conference crown in the finals opener Sunday night at the Filoil Flying V Arena in San Juan.
The Lady Troopers shut down the Lady Stags reinforcements Jeng Bualee and tournament MVP Lauren Ford in the opening frame, where the Recto-based spikers could only muster nine hits.

Tigresses, Tamaraws top UAAP beach volleyball
MARU BANATICLA bucked cramps and together with Judy Caballejo scored a 21-19, 21-16 University of Santo Tomas victory over Ateneo’s Alyssa Valdez and Bea Tan for the Tigresses first UAAP women’s beach volley championship Sunday at the UE Caloocan sand court.
“This win was made possible with the help of God. Hindi ako nawalan ng loob sa kabila ng nangyari kay Maru (Banaticla),” said Caballejo, the season MVP.
The Lady Eagles forced the “winner-take-all” Game 3 after they levelled the race-to-two series, 21-19, 21-15, Game 2.
Far Eastern University’s Arvin Avila and Karl de la Calzada prevented a bigger UST celebration when they beat Tigers Jayson Ramos and Mark Gil Alfafara, 21-14, 21-17, for the Tamaraws’ second-straight men’s crown. Read the rest of this entry »
Tigresses near beach volley crown
UNIVERSITY of Santo Tomas moved a win away of claiming the women’s division crown as Maru Banaticla and Judy Caballejo upended Ateneo’s Alyssa Valdez and Bea Tan, 21-16, 18-21, 15-9, Saturday at the UAAP beach volleyball tournament at the UE Caloocan sand court.
The Lady Eagles raced to a 4-2 lead in the deciding third set before the Tigresses unloaded six straight points to take control of the match.
Game 2 of the best-of-three series is set at 8:45 a.m., where UST is gunning for a first-ever championship.
Ateneo send the game to a decider when Valdez and Tan waxed hot in the second set.
Banaticla and Caballejo was the first finalist after routing Michelle Gumabao and Camille Cruz of No. 4 La Salle in the semifinals, 21-13, 21-11. Read the rest of this entry »
