VEERING away from its old tradition, the University Athletic Association of the Philippines opens its new season with a daring Olympic-style opening ceremony on Saturday at the Marikina Sports Park.
The 4 p.m. rites will focus not only on basketball, but also to the other student-athletes from other sports disciplines who will also parade in the oval.
Formal hostilities begin on the next day with the centerpiece seniors basketball event at the Araneta Coliseum.
Despite the departure of some of their student-athletes and coaches in the off-season, the Growling Tigers and the Tigresses are still favored to win their 39th general championship in the seniors division and 13th in the juniors category.
Aside from basketball, there are seven sports lined up in league’s first semester, which includes beach volleyball, which is hosted by University of the East, is set top open on August 27 at the UE Caloocan sand court.
Far Eastern University is the men’s defending champion, while Adamson is the two-time women titlist.Volleyball remains as the league’s main attraction in the second semester,. (TJ)
