THE battle for the coveted Most Valuable Player in the UAAP women’s volleyball tournament has turned out to be a two-cornered fight between University of Santo Tomas star Aiza Maizo and La Salle’s Jacq Alarca.
Both playing in their final collegiate season, Maizo and Alarca are mired in a hotly-contested duel for the league’s highest individual award.
Maizo, who is seeking to lead the Tigresses to a second straight crown, emerged as the top scorer in the recently-concluded eliminations with 263 points by collecting 224 spikes, 33 blocks and six service aces.
The 23-year old spiker also lords it over in the receveing department with a 39.47 percent efficiency rating.
Alarca, who is trying to help the Lady Archers regain the title it last won in 2008-09 season, was the No. 1 attacker in the elims with a 42.34 percent success rating to edge out Maizo, who ended up in second with 38.75 percent.
The 5-foot-9 Alarca topped the service department with a 0.57 average per set.
La Salle and UST finished 1-2 in the elims, where the two powerhouses must beat Ateneo and Adamson, respectively, only once in the ‘Final Four’ to arrange a finals rematch.
The semifinals begin Wednesday with the second-ranked Tigresses facing third seed Lady Falcons.
On Saturday, topnotcher Lady Archers and No. 4 Lady Eagles will face off for the first time in the ‘Final Four’.
Other league’s top scorers in the ‘Top 5’ were Adamson’s Angela Benting (222), Maica Morada of Far Eastern University (211), Cai Nepomuceno of National University (209) and Pau Soriano of Adamson (206).
La Salle sophomore Michelle Gumabao was the tournament’s top blocker with a 0.80 average per set, while Jem Ferrer of Ateneo remains on track for a second straight Best Setter award with a league-leading 14.35 average per set.
Although she placed second behind Maizo in receiving, Lady Bulldogs libero Jen Reyes is the top digger with a 5.02 average per set.
The awarding of the individual honorees is set during the championship round next week. (TJ)

bakit wala pang rookie of the year??
We dont know yet if there was a rookie of the year award this season. We will see.
Although both are very good players, the MVP award should go to Aiza Maizo for the very reasons that she has been playing excitingly and tremendously for the Tigresses. She is playing even more consistently and stronger than last year when the Tigresses had Tabaquero in their line up. Also note that in the previous game vs La Salle, Maizo switched position as a center spiker/middle blocker for UST which even wowed the crowd for her versatility. Even the commentators cannot hide their admiration for this tremendous player, Aiza Maizo.

i think, one of the the lady tamaraws deserves the rookie of the year, although marami ding 1st palying year sa ibang grupo mas crucial naman ang laro ng mga napakabatang FEU players. Napakalaki din ng pressure sa kanila kasi si Morada lang yung senior sa kanila!
Close fight but i’ll still go for Maika Maizo she did an excellent job for her team!
