DEFENDING five-time champion San Sebastian College turned back first time semifinalist San Beda College, 25-12, 25-13, 25-18, at the restart of the semifinals of the NCAA women’s volleyball tournament Monday at the Emilio Aguinaldo College Gym.
Except for a Lionesses rally late in the third frame, the Lady Stags were dominating in the 48 minute match.
A hit by Janine Marciano allowed San Beda to move closer to 16-18 when Elaine Cruz starred in San Sebastian’s 7-2 run to seal the straight sets win.
Reigning MVP Joy Benito uncorked 20 hits, including five service aces, while Cruz added 16 points for the Lady Stags.
All nine players fielded in by San Sebastian coach Roger Gorayeb scored one hit or more.
Team captain Cherry Mae Quizon and Marciano finished with seven hits apiece while Coline Malana added five hits for the Lionesses.
In the second match, Letran rebounded from a first set loss to subdue Emilio Aguinaldo College, 22-25, 25-18, 25-13, 25-21.
The Lady Stags and the Lady Knights can forge a best-of-three finals showdown with another victory on Thursday.
Manel Carolino and Melissa Cu had 13 hits while skipper Lailane Villarin had 11 markers, including two blocks for Letran, which last made it to the finals in 2006.
Dona Mae Factor and Charmille Belleza combined for 30 hits for the Lady Generals.
In the men’s division, University of Perpetual Help System Dalta beat Arellano University, 25-15, 25-23, 25-20, to complete a three-game semis sweep.
The Altas and the Chiefs, who finished second with a 2-1 record, will meet in the best-of-three finals next week.
San Beda took third place by defeating deposed champion Letran, 28-26, 25-22, 25-23. (TJ)
