Posted by admin On January - 9 - 2011

ADAMSON bucked a third set loss to turn back University of the Philippines, 25-22, 25-14, 22-25, 25-18, to stay in third spot in the UAAP women’s volleyball tournament Sunday at the Filoil Flying V Arena in San Juan.

The Lady Falcons held off a late Lady Maroons rally in the fourth frame with team captain Angela Benting and Mayette Zapanta taking charge to notch their fourth straight win.

With a 5-2 card in third place, Adamson kept within distance of joint leaders University of Santo Tomas and La Salle.

The Tigresses and the Lady Archers, who are both unbeaten in six matches, dispute the bragging rights of being the first round topnotcher on Wednesday.

In the second game, Fille Cainglet sizzled with 14 hits while Gretchen Ho had 10 points, including three blocks as Ateneo dumped Far Eastern University, 25-14, 25-19, 25-11, and tie National University in fourth place at 3-4.

“We are fully recovered from our sorry loss to University of the East.  We are still on target in making it to the Final Four,” said Lady Eagles mentor Roger Gorayeb.

Ateneo, which drew combined 15 markers from Dzi Gervacio and Kara Acevedo, capped its first round campaign with a two-game winning streak.

“Satisfied ako sa ipinakita namin sa first round, at least nakatutok pa rin kami sa La Salle at UST.  Maganda ang chances namin sa second round, umaangat na ang laro ng mga bata,” said Lady Falcons mentor Dulce Pante.

Benting finished with a personal season-high 25 points, including two blocks and two service aces, and 12 digs while Pau Soriano added 22 hits markers for Adamson.

Carmela Lopez and Angeli Araneta combined for 28 hits, while Pau Genido and South Ramos added 10 points apiece for UP.

The Lady Maroons erased the Lady Falcons’ 22-21 lead with Genido and Araneta on the firing end to steal the third frame.

But Adamson restored things order in the fourth set to seal the deal.

“Naging pabaya ang mga bata sa third set, mabuti at naka-recover kami.  Sa skills kasi, angat naman talaga kami,” said Pante, who guided the Lady Falcons to their second Shakey’s V-League title last September.

The Lady Maroons and the Lady Tamaraws fell deeper in the standings with 1-5 and 0-6 cards, respectively.

In the men’s division, La Salle beat Ateneo, 25-19, 25-18, 25-20, while UP downed University of the East, 25-19, 25-22, 25-22.  (TJ)
