Lady Eagles, Falcons near UAAP semis
ATENEO and Adamson moved closer in nailing the two remaining semifinals slots by posting straight set victories Sunday in the UAAP women’s volleyball tournament at the Filoil Flying V Arena in San Juan.
Peaking at the right time, the Lady Eagles extended their winning run to six games by blasting Far Eastern University, 25-17, 25-19, 25-19, while the Lady Falcons sent University of the Philippines crashing back to earth with a 25-20, 25-21, 25-22 victory.
Dzi Gervacio fired 15 hits while birthday girl Fille Cainglet had 10 points for the Lady Eagles.
Ateneo will next face University of the East, which will try to avenge its upset loss in the first round on Wednesday, and league-leading La Salle on Sunday. Read the rest of this entry »
UST in semis, La Salle moved closer to ‘twice-to-beat’
DEFENDING champion University of Santo Tomas rebounded from a stunning loss to University of the Philippines with an emphatic 25-14, 25-18, 25-17 win over University of the East and claim the second ‘Final Four’ berth in the UAAP women’s volleyball tournament Saturday at the Filoil Flying V Arena sa San Juan.
Aiza Maizo unloaded 13 hits, 12 of which coming from attacks, while Judy Ann Caballejo and Maika Ortiz chipped in 11 points apiece for the Tigresses.
UST hiked its record to 8-3, holding an one and a half game lead over Ateneo and Adamson, which both currently tote identical 6-4 marks, in the race for the second ‘twice-to-beat’ bonus in the semis. Read the rest of this entry »
’6-peat’ for the Lady Stags; Altas end 22-year title drought


SAN Sebastian College rallied from two sets down to escape with a 22-25, 22-25, 25-12, 25-15, 15-12 win over Letran and register a ‘six-peat’ in the NCAA women’s volleyball tournament Thursday at the Filoil Flying V Arena in San Juan.
In the second game, Joax Joaquin sizzled with 17 markers with Jay dela Cruz had 12 hits as University of Perpetual Help System Dalta ended a 21-year title drought in the men’s division with a 22-25, 25-10, 25-16, 25-18 win over Arellano University.
“I’m happy that we won the championship which somehow ease the pain sa mga losses namin sa basketball and women’s volleyball,” said an elated Altas coach Sammy Acaylar, who won his sixth NCAA title. Read the rest of this entry »
Gumabao shines as Lady Archers enter ‘F4′
SOPHOMORE Michelle Gumabao continued her breakout performance as La Salle booked the first ‘Final Four’ berth with a 25-19, 25-11, 25-23 win against Far Eastern University Wednesday in UAAP women’s volleyball tournament at the Filoil Flying V Arena in San Juan.
A product of Holy Spirit-Quezon City, Gumabao finished with 11 points, including four blocks, to lift the Lady Archers notch their ninth win in 10 matches.
“Happy ako sa inilalaro ni Michelle (Gumabao), mataas ang kumpiyansa ng bata. Mataas ang kanyang percentage sa attacks, blocks at service. Masipag hindi lamang sa laro pati sa ensayo,” said La Salle mentor Ramil de Jesus. Read the rest of this entry »
