UST, La Salle remain unbeaten to end 2010′s campaign

UNIVERSITY of Santo Tomas capped a memorable ‘Year of the Tiger’ the way it started – with a win.

Judy Caballejo drilled in 16 points to lead the Tigresses to a 25-7, 25-14, 25-10 crushing of University of the East and notch their fifth straight victory in the UAAP women’s volleyball tournament Saturday at the Filoil Flying V Arena in San Juan.

In the second match, La Salle joined UST anew on top with a 25-15, 20-25, 25-12, 25-20 triumph of Far Eastern University.

Jacq Alarca unloaded 21 markers, including three service aces and two blocks, while Stephanie Mercado added 17 hits for the Lady Spikers.

The Lady Tamaraws, led by Maica Morada with 15 points, remained winless in five games.

The Tigresses pounced on the Lady Warriors’ poor reception and weak floor defense to finish the year 2010 undefeated.

On a 17-game winning streak, UST has not tasted a loss since dropping a 17-25, 18-25, 25-22, 16-25 decision of Ateneo on Dec. 19, 2009.

Also, the Tigresses ended a two-year streak where the España-based spikers lost their final game before the annual Christmas break.

“Masaya ako dahil nanalo na rin kami finally bago mag-Pasko.  Sinabi ko sa girls na puwede tayong mag-enjoy as long as we keep our 100 percent focus sa game,” said UST mentor Shaq delos Santos. Read the rest of this entry »
