UNIVERSITY of Perpetual Help System Dalta started its bid for a back-to-back women’s crown on a high as Keshia de Luna and April Ann Sartin routed San Sebastian College rookies Karen Berbano and Bea Uy, 21-5, 21-13, Sunday in the NCAA beach volleyball tournament at theLa Salle-Greenhills sand court.
De Luna and Sartin took advantage of the inexperience of the Lady Stags’ duo for the Lady Altas to score their first win.
Season 85 runner-up College of Saint Benilde and Letran are now Perpetual Help’s biggest threat in the throne after getting the early share of the lead.
Giza Yumang and Rossan Fajardo of the Lady Blazers subdued Patricia Mae Aquino and Rachelle Anne Tan of Mapua, 21-14, 21-15, and Arellano University’s Mary Ann Calleja and Mary Jane Diane Ticar, 21-7, 21-16.
Gena Andaya and Marinelle Carolino of the Lady Knights beat the Emilio Aguinaldo College tandem of Charmille Belleza and Annabelle Dionela, 16-21, 21-10, 15-11 while routing Mapua’s Tan and Aquino, 21-9, 21-15.
Belleza and Dionela rebounded to help EAC in registering a 23-21, 22-20 win over San Beda College’s Cherry Mae Quizon and Coline Malana.
The Lady Generals, Lady Chiefs and the Lioness are now toting 1-1 cards, while the Lady Stags and the Lady Cardinals fell to 0-2 slates.
In men’s division, Erickson Ramos and Rudy Gatdula of the two-time titlist Letran survived Mapua’s Ralph Ocampo and Cornelio de Ramos, 22-20, 22-17, to improve to 2-0.
San Beda and Arellano also hiked their records to 2-0 as James Lorca and Lorenzo Capate of the Red Lions defeated EAC’s Juvie Mangaring and Howard Mojica, 16-21, 21-14, 15-10. John Lozada and Chris Salvador of the Chiefs beat Jerome Sibal and Chad de Castro of St. Benilde, 21-14, 21-13.
In the juniors division, defending champion Perpetual Help Junior Altas started their campaign on a bright note by tripping the San Beda Red Cubs, 21-13, 21-12.
The Arellano Baby Chiefs bounced back from an opening set loss to waylaid the Jose Rizal Light Bombers, 16-21, 21-9, 15-9, while the San Sebastian Staglets trampled Letran Squires, 21-13, 21-15.
