ATENEO dragged National University in a playoff with University of Perpetual Help for the last quarterfinals berth in the Shakey’s V-League second conference.
The Lady Eagles survived a tough Lady Bulldogs challenge in the last two sets to hammer out a 25-14, 25-22, 26-24 win last night at the Filoil Flying V Arena in San Juan.
In the first game, Perpetual Help fought back from an opening set setback and swept the next three
frames, completing a 23-25, 25-21, 25-17, 25-22 victory over College of Saint Benilde.
The Lady Altas, with Sandra delos Santos and Nica Guliman on the attacking end, outlasted the Blazers in closely fought games in the last three sets to close out the single round elims phase with a 2-5 slate to tie with the Lady Bulldogs.
Perpetual Help and NU will dispute the last quarters berth on Sunday.
Delos Santos fired 14 kills and Guliman had 13 as they combined for a 34-point output for Perpetual Help, which shocked Adamson in five sets in its debut last July 15 but dropped its next five matches to move to the brink of elimination.
Ronerry dela Cruz added 14 hits while April Ann Sartin tossed in 12 points as the Lady Altas outhit the Lady Blazers, 54-47, and had more blocks, 10-8, including four from Dlos Santos.
St. Benilde closed out with a 0-7 mark in its first-ever winless campaign in the league sponsored by Shakey’s Pizza and backed by Accel, Mikasa and Excelroof.
The Lady Blazers looked headed for a big win after snatching the first set but wavered in down-to-the-wire finishes in the next three frames.
Giza Yumang paced St. Benilde with 19 markers while Cindy Optana and Rossan Fajardo had 16 and 14 points, respectively.
Guest player Alyssa Valdez had 12 markers while Dzi Gervacio and Fille Cainglet added 10 markers apiece for the Lady Eagles.
