EVEN in abroad, the University of Santo Tomas volleyball is on a roll.
The UST alumni team survived a close opening set to subdue TNT Singapore, 26-24, 25-19, 25-17, and clinch the championship in the recently-concluded Volleyball Association of Singapore’s Volleyball Invitational Championships at the Toa Payoh Sports Hall in Singapore.
Composed of members of its former national team, TNT Singapore showed poise in the first frame before the Tigresses snatch the opening set with a drop shot by Mayette Carolino.
UST, which bannered by Shakey’s V-League standouts Mary Jean Balse and Michelle Carolino, coasted along in the next two sets to score the victory and the championship.
Last week, Balse and Mchelle Carolino led the Tigresses in completing a rare ‘three-peat’ in the V-League.
Other members of UST alumni include Cherry Rose Macatangay, Roxanne Pimentel, Rubie de Leon, Karen Co Yu Kang, Mayette Carolino, Monica Aleta, Joanna Torrijos, Kate Co Yu Kang and libero Vilet Ponce de Leon.
Angeli Tabaquero joined the Tigresses’ trip but she was not able to play due to a knee injury suffered in the UST-San Sebastian College championship.
The Tigresses advanced to the championship round by dumping the Thailand Youth team in the semifinals, 25-17, 25-14, 25-11.
UST topped the Group D preliminaries by crushing the Singapore Youth team, 25-19, 25-15, 25-11.
In the week-long tournament, the Tigresses have never dropped a set. (TJ)
