Tigeresses still basking in glory
UNIVERSITY of Santo Tomas, long-considered as the most popular team in the Shakey’s V-League, has the crowd to thank for in extending its domination in the tournament.
“Gusto kong magpasalamat sa mga loyal fans namin. Talagang ibinigay ng mga girls ang lahat ng kanilang makakaya at marami kaming napasayang tao,” said Tigresses mentor Shaq delos Santos. “Sobrang happy pa rin ako hanggang ngayon. Sa sipag at tiyaga ng mga bata, nagawa naming mag-champion uli,” he added.
Still basking in glory after completing a rare ‘three-peat’, UST defeated San Sebastian College, 25-20, 25-27, 25-12, 25-14, in the
‘sudden death’ duel for the first conference championship Thursday night at the Filoil Flying V Arena in San Juan.
The Tigresses copped a sixth league title and cement their status as the No. 1 women’s volleyball team in the country. UST also equaled La Salle’s feat in winning three consecutive titles in the 2005-06 seasons.
Delos Santos, who at the age of 31 has already won a lot of championships for the Tigresses, also gave tribute to his assistant mentor Vilet Ponce de Leon.
Tigresses new V-League Dynasty
MAKE way for University of Santo Tomas, the Shakey’s V-League new dynasty. The Tigresses played their A-game to complete a rare ‘three-peat’ with an emphatic 25-20, 25-27, 25-12, 25-14 victory over San Sebastian College in the ‘sudden death’ duel for the first conference championship Thursday night before a full-house crowd at the Filoil
Flying V Arena in San Juan.
UST won the series, 2-1, to equal La Salle’s three consecutive titles snared in the 2005-06 seasons. Team captain Aiza Maizo shone in the Tigresses’ title-clinching win by firing 17 hits en route in winning the Finals MVP honors.
“Sobrang saya ang feeling. Kahit isa lang ang award na napanalunan ko this conference (Best Spiker), mas masaya na ako at nag-champion uli ang UST,” said Maizo. “Sinabi ko sa mga bata before the game na enjoy lang and make the most out of it,” she added.
The Tigresses, who snared their league-leading sixth title, also drew big numbers from Maika Ortiz, Mary Jean Balse, Rhea Dimaculangan and Dindin Santiago.
Ortiz (16), Balse (13) and Dimaculangan (12) submitted double digit scores, but the revelation in the finals decider was Santiago. The 6-foot-1 Santiago, who was not fielded in Game 2, finished with nine hits, including three blocks, in what could be her final game for UST.

‘Sudden death’ Thursday
ALL is not lost for University of Santo Tomas despite losing to San Sebastian College via a hairline in Game 2.
The Lady Stags may have the momentum of their 21-25, 25-16, 15-25, 25-20, 15-13 victory Tuesday night, but coach Shaq delos Santos remained unfazed.
“We still have a good chance tomorrow (today) provided they all perform well,” said De los Santos, back at the Tigresses helm after a week-long absence.
UST and San Sebastian College go for all the marbles as they clash in a sudden death showdown for the Shakey’s V-League first conference championship at 4 p.m. on Thursday before an expected SRO crowd at the Filoil Flying V Arena in San Juan.
The Tigresses struggled in the finals, as Angeli Tabaquero went down with a season-ending injury in the series opener, while Maru Banaticla had a sprained ankle she suffered on the eve of Game 2.
“Maru (Banaticla) remains a doubtful starter in Game 3,” said delos Santos.
But UST is still a force to reckon with, as veteran Aiza Maizo will banner the España-based onslaught along with guest players Mary Jean Balse, Michelle Carolino, setter Rhea Dimaculangan and Maika Ortiz.
