Letran Knights boost up for Semifinals
WARREN Pirante and Erickson Ramos of defending champion Letran edged the gritty pair of Jay dela Cruz and Ralph Savellano of Perpetual Help, 18-21, 21-16, 17-15, Saturday to sweep the men’s elimination round in the NCAA beach volleyball tournament at the Cantada Sports Center in Taguig City.
Pirante and Ramos, however, had to overcome a one set deficit by attacking the net more often to seize the next two sets, for the Knights to complete a seven-game sweep of the preliminaries and clinch the top seeding in the semifinals.
DLSU opens 1st Set Loss but remains untouchable
DEFENDING champion La Salle bucked an opening set loss to waylaid University of the Philippines, 23-25, 25-17, 25-11, 25-18, and clinch the ‘twice-to-beat’ bonus in the ‘Final Four’ of the UAAP women’s volleyball tournament Saturday at the Filoil Flying V Arena in San Juan.
In the first game, University of Santo Tomas inched closer in snaring the second semifinals berth by reasserting its mastery of University of the East, 25-18, 25-19, 25-12.
Stephanie Mercado fired 23 hits while Jacq Alarca chipped in 22 points for Lady Archers.
La Salle improved to 11-0, as the Taft-based spikers are on track in replicating the feat of a 14-game sweep which they did in the 2004 season.

Lady Green Archers picked up 1st slot for final 4
LA SALLE copped the first ‘Final Four’ slot by crushing Far Eastern University, 25-16, 25-23, 25-14, Wednesday in the UAAP women’s volleyball tournament at the Filoil Flying V Arena in San Juan.
Veterans Stephanie Mercado and Jacq Alarca had 13 points apiece while rookie Abigail Maraño added seven hits for the defending champion Lady Archers, who have won 10 straight matches.
“Mas mabigat na ang responsibility at sana ma-sustain pa namin (yung winning form). Dapat i-anticipate na ang lahat ng pwedeng mangyari at sana less injury sa mga bata,” La Salle coach Ramil De Jesus said.
The Lady Archers have a 12-game winning streak which dates back from last season. The Taft-based spikers, who are gunning for a sixth league title, last lost in Game 1 of their best-of-three series against the Morayta volleybelles.
